FAQ

How can a senior receive Meals on Wheels People meals?

Meals on Wheels People’s meals are nutritious lunches that are delivered Monday through Thursday to the homebound older adults who meet these requirements:

  • 60 years of age or older (or the spouse of a person 60 years of age or older)
  • at risk of malnutrition
  • unable to come in to a Meals on Wheels People center for a meal

What is a typical Meals on Wheels People menu?

Our menus are designed to provide at least one-third of the daily nutrients required for older adults. Each meal includes a salad, entrée, starch, vegetable, bread, dessert, and milk. We also provide the DASH diet for those who require diabetic, soft, low cholesterol or low sodium meals. Vegetarian meals are also available.

Is Meals on Wheels a national program?

Every state has a Meals on Wheels program, but a variety of nonprofit organizations provide these services. A majority of programs are members of Meals on Wheels America, a national association that secures funding in Washington DC. We provide Meals on Wheels service to Multnomah, Washington, and Clark counties.

How many people are employed by Meals on Wheels People?

We employ about 150 full- and part-time people and depend on more than 250 volunteers every day.

How much does each meal cost?

The cost of each meal is $10.50 and diners aged 60 and older are asked to contribute what they can afford.

What is your funding source?

Meals on Wheels People receive funding from a variety of sources. More than 70 percent of our annual budget comes from contributions from the community. We receive some federal support through Older American Act and Medicaid dollars, as well as from the USDA. Participants are asked to contribute what they can toward the cost of their meals and we have an active development department that seeks private donations and grants.
